Why TOU Sales Are Hard for Dealers

Customers Want Numbers — Dealers Have to Be Honest About Them

TOU battery storage is one of the most ROI-driven home energy sales conversations there is. Customers ask "how much will I save?" — and good dealers don't promise fixed numbers, they help the customer compute them.

Rising Tariff Volatility

Many markets are widening peak-off-peak spreads. Customers want to lock in protection against peak-rate increases.

Customers Don't Understand ROI

Dealers need to explain payback logic — not just battery specs — for the customer to make a confident purchase.

Dispatch Strategy Is Complex

Off-peak charge, peak discharge, solar priority, backup reserve — multiple modes have to coexist cleanly.

Market Policy Varies

Some markets have aggressive TOU, others flat tariffs. Page must guide tariff/load/PV data submission, not promise universal ROI.

How TOU Battery Storage Works

Four Time Windows In A 24-Hour Day

A TOU schedule turns electricity timing into electricity cost. The battery acts as a buffer between when energy is cheapest and when it's most expensive — with PV and backup-reserve sitting on top of the cycle.

OFF-PEAK · NIGHT

Charge from Grid

Cheap kWh in

Battery fills at the lowest grid tariff. Grid does the work while the rate is low.

DAYTIME

Solar Supplement

Free PV in

PV charges the battery further (where solar is present). Free kWh layered on top of cheap kWh.

PEAK · EVENING

Discharge to Loads

Expensive kWh avoided

Battery covers home loads during peak-rate hours. Customer skips the most expensive grid imports.

RESERVE

Backup SOC Held

Below-floor protected

EMS holds a minimum SOC (e.g. 20%) at all times for outage backup, independent of the TOU cycle.

Where TOU Storage Makes Sense

Four Market Conditions That Justify Battery Storage

TOU doesn't make economic sense everywhere. Where the four conditions below are present, a residential battery has a strong ROI conversation with the homeowner. Where they're not, the dealer should be honest about it.

Clear Peak / Off-Peak Spread

Markets where the peak tariff is meaningfully higher than off-peak — typically a 2× or larger spread. Without this, the battery doesn't have enough margin to earn its cost.

Dynamic / Variable Pricing

Markets with time-of-day, day-of-week or even hourly real-time pricing. The more granular the tariff structure, the more value a smart-dispatched battery can capture.

Weak-Grid + Peak Demand Charges

Markets where homeowners face demand charges in addition to time-based pricing — battery discharge cuts the peak demand spike, not just the energy import.

Low Feed-In Tariff Markets

Where solar export rates have dropped, self-consumption becomes much more valuable. TOU + solar = stored solar discharged during peak hours.

ROI Logic, Not Fixed Promise

Six Inputs That Drive Customer Payback

We do not publish a fixed payback period because it depends entirely on the customer's tariff and load profile. Instead, we publish the six inputs that go into the calculation — so dealers can plug in local numbers and produce honest ROI guidance for the customer.

01

Tariff Spread

Peak rate minus off-peak rate (USD/kWh). The bigger the spread, the more value each cycle captures.

02

Daily Load Profile

How many kWh the home actually uses during peak hours — and how much the battery can offset.

03

Usable Battery Capacity

Battery size in kWh × usable depth-of-discharge. Larger battery = more kWh arbitraged per cycle.

04

Cycle Strategy

Cycles per year (usually 365 daily) × round-trip efficiency (~90% for LiFePO4).

05

PV Generation

If solar is present, free PV charging stacks on top of TOU arbitrage, accelerating payback.

06

Backup Reserve

SOC held back for outages (e.g. 20%) reduces TOU-active capacity but adds resilience value.

Recommended Battery Sizes

Four Capacity Tiers, Four Customer Profiles

For most TOU customers, capacity selection follows the daily peak-hour kWh consumption. These four tiers cover the bulk of residential TOU projects — from apartment to villa.

Entry

5

kWh Battery

Daily peak load: 3 – 5 kWh

Small homes, apartments, light evening load. Lowest-cost entry to TOU arbitrage.

Mainstream

10

kWh Battery

Daily peak load: 6 – 10 kWh

3-4 bedroom homes with typical evening cooking, entertainment and HVAC. The TOU mainstream.

POPULAR

Higher Usage

15

kWh Battery

Daily peak load: 10 – 15 kWh

Larger homes with electric cooking, heat pumps and longer peak periods. Strong arbitrage capture.

Project Grade

25

kWh+ Stackable

Daily peak load: 20 kWh+

Villas, large homes, light-commercial TOU and homes with EV charging on peak avoidance.

Home Battery Backup Manufacturers

TOU + Solar Self-Consumption

Value Stacking — Solar & TOU Together

A homeowner with rooftop PV and TOU pricing gets both savings stacked. Solar charges the battery during the day (free kWh in), the battery discharges during peak hours (expensive kWh avoided). The same battery does both jobs.

Stacked Value

Solar self-consumption + TOU arbitrage on one battery

One Battery, Two Revenue Streams

For dealers, the strongest sales conversation is showing the homeowner two simultaneous benefits — solar self-consumption AND peak-tariff avoidance — on the same hardware they were going to buy anyway.

Daytime: Solar Fills the Battery

PV first powers home loads. Surplus solar charges the battery (free kWh) instead of being exported at low rates.

Off-Peak: Top Up From Grid

If solar hasn't fully charged the battery, off-peak grid charging tops it up at the cheapest rate of day.

Peak: Battery Powers Home

During peak hours, the home runs off battery — replacing both expensive grid imports and post-sunset solar gaps.

Reserve: Backup Always Ready

SOC floor held above 20% for outages. The same system that saves money daily also covers grid failure.

TOU Home Battery FAQ

Questions From TOU Dealers & Energy Service Partners

The questions we hear most from dealers and energy service companies selling TOU battery storage into tariff-active markets.

What is time-of-use home battery storage?

Time-of-use (TOU) home battery storage is a system that charges the battery during off-peak (low-tariff) hours and discharges during peak (high-tariff) hours. The customer pays the cheap rate to fill the battery, then the home uses stored energy when the grid charges the highest rate — replacing expensive grid imports with low-cost stored electricity. Often combined with solar PV for stacked value.

Yes. The hybrid inverter and battery EMS run a daily schedule: at the off-peak window (typically night or midday low-demand period), the system charges the battery from the grid; during peak hours (typically late afternoon and evening), the system stops importing from the grid and discharges battery to home loads. Schedules are configurable per local tariff structure.

ROI is the product of six inputs:
(1) peak-to-off-peak tariff spread (USD/kWh);
(2) usable battery capacity (kWh);
(3) cycles per year (usually 365 for daily TOU);
(4) round-trip efficiency (~90% for LiFePO4);
(5) any additional solar contribution;
(6) backup reserve held back. We do not promise a fixed payback period because tariffs and load profiles differ by region — we provide a sizing logic and let the customer plug in their actual numbers.

Yes — solar + TOU is value-stacking. During the day, solar charges the battery (free energy). During peak hours, the battery discharges (replacing expensive grid imports). During off-peak, any remaining capacity charges from the grid at low rates. Combined, this gives a higher self-consumption rate and stronger TOU arbitrage than either strategy alone.

LiFePO4 batteries are rated for 6000+ cycles at 80% capacity retention. At one cycle per day (typical TOU operation) that's a 16+ year cycle life, well beyond the 5-year warranty. TOU operation is one of the use cases LiFePO4 was specifically designed for — high cycle count at moderate depth-of-discharge.

Yes. The EMS allows a minimum SOC reserve to be set — for example, holding 20% capacity at all times for backup. The TOU schedule operates above that reserve. This lets a single system serve TOU arbitrage daily and outage backup on demand, without giving up either function entirely.
