AC-coupled add-on

Brownout protection

Hybrid operates in grid-tied mode but battery covers grid sags, dips and brief outages without the home noticing. Larger battery reserve (15+ kWh) with continuous handoff to grid mode.

Outage-first deployment

Battery SOC reserve is held high (e.g. 50%+) at all times so outages always get backup. Self-consumption is secondary. Common in outage-prone regions and homes with critical medical loads.

What is a hybrid home energy storage system?

A hybrid home energy storage system integrates three energy sources — solar PV, the public grid and a LiFePO4 battery — managed by a hybrid inverter. It can simultaneously charge from PV, charge from the grid (when off-peak), discharge to home loads, export to the grid (where allowed), and provide backup when the grid is down. One system covers multiple use cases instead of needing separate off-grid, backup and self-consumption systems.

Off-grid systems operate fully independently with no grid connection. Backup systems are grid-tied and switch to battery only during outages. Hybrid systems are grid-tied year-round but actively manage solar generation, battery storage, grid interaction and backup — running multiple modes (self-consumption, peak shifting, backup, grid charging) on the same hardware.

Yes — that's the core advantage. The hybrid inverter manages all three sources in real time. During the day, PV powers home loads first, surplus charges the battery, and any excess can be exported to the grid. In the evening, the battery discharges. During off-peak hours, the system can charge the battery from the grid. During outages, the battery automatically powers critical loads.

Yes. The hybrid inverter supports both DC-coupled PV charging (via MPPT) and AC charging from the grid. Grid charging is typically scheduled for off-peak hours to take advantage of cheap electricity, which is then used during peak hours — known as time-of-use (TOU) arbitrage. Configuration is set via the inverter EMS or BMS communication.

Yes. When the grid drops, the hybrid inverter automatically switches to off-grid mode and supplies AC to home loads from battery and PV. UPS-grade switchover protects sensitive equipment. The size of the load that can be backed up depends on the hybrid inverter's rated output and the battery's available capacity at the time of outage.
